Rick's background

 

 

Rick learnt to fly microlights with Gerry Breen

in 1980, starting on a single seat Eagle.  

 

After a seventeen year absence, through work

commitments, he resumed at Sandy on a

Quantum 912 in 1999, gaining his licence in 2000. He bought Quantum G-BZRJ, flew around 400 hours and in 2003 built his first SkyRanger G-SKRG. After 1100 hours, which included trips to Poland, Germany, Italy and France, in 2009 he completed a second SkyRanger, the Swift 912S variant, G-HMCB. 700 hours later in 2014 he acquired SD1 Minisport OK QUR 01, reregistered as G-CIMA. This aircraft was written off in an accident on 24 May 2015 and was replaced by a 50 hp version, G-CIZA. This aircraft suffered a heavy landing and was returned to the factory for repairs after which Rick sold it. Rick completed 100 takeoffs and 98 landings in his MInisport and he continues to fly SkyRanger Swift G-HMCB.

 

In his spare time he writes articles for UK aviation magazines. 

In 2004 he founded the Whitehill Farm Aero Club, which has grown to be one of the largest flying clubs in the UK, with over 100 members. He has served twice on the BMAA's Council, 2008-09 when he was Treasurer, and 2012-2015. During this time he introduced the MF Landing Coupons programme, a major SkyDemon discount scheme and he founded the Microlight Flying Foundation.

 

In 2008 he was awarded the BMAA's Ashley Doubtfire Trophy and in early 2015 he was awarded the Royal Aero Club's Bronze medal, both awards for his services to microlighting. 

 

In autumn 2017 his membership of the BMAA was terminated by the Board. This decision remains under dispute (Nov 2017).

 

Outside flying he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is engaged in their programmes.
